Leaves+Amphibian Stage Book Club: At The Heart of the White Rose
Join us for a discussion of At The Heart of the White Rose: Letters and Diaries of Hans and Sophie Scholl on Monday, February 17 from 7-830pm.
This special book club is in collaboration with our friends at Amphibian Stage who are currently hosting the world premiere of the play Hans and Sophie, based upon this book. Playwrights (and actors) Sean Huddock and Illana Stein will be joining us in our discussion.
Siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl were leaders in a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany called the White Rose. Although known for their shared political beliefs, the group originally joined together because of their mutual love of the arts, philosophy, theology, and nature. They became martyrs in their early 20s for their beliefs, having been tried and convicted for treason and sentenced to death. Brave until the end, as demonstrated by young Sophie's last words: "Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go... What does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"
