Magnolia Avenue Designated a Great Street of Texas for 2018
Apr 05, 2018
The Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association announced recently that Magnolia Avenue has been designated a Great Street by the state chapter’s Great Places in Texas program.
Great Places in Texas exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. This year marks the second year of the Great Places in Texas program, which is modeled from the American Planning Association’s ongoing Great Places in America program.
The transformation of Magnolia Avenue over the last 30 years has been the centerpiece revitalization project of the Near Southside. Thanks to the work of many who could see then what it was meant to become, this once neglected street now draws thousands of visitors and unifies a historic neighborhood, a medical district, and a surge of new development.
“It has been an honor to join the many hardworking stakeholders who have been at this effort long before my arrival,” District 9 Councilmember Ann Zadeh said. “Advocating for and seeing the success of a street that reflects all the best urban design principals, and creating places for people that are walkable and engaging is an amazing accomplishment. The work continues as I partner with stakeholders in other District 9 Urban Villages, to move these projects forward.”
