Near Southside Announces Winner of Mag & May Mural Contest
Dec 11, 2018
Art South, a Near Southside, Inc. initiative to advance the arts, and Hudgins Companies presented the Mag & May Mural Commission Contest this fall. Twenty artists were selected to paint murals along the ground floor stoops of the new Mag & May apartment development under construction on Magnolia Avenue at May Street.
Once the murals were completed, a public vote was held, and artist Anya Bosworth was named the winner. Anya will receive $2,000 in addition to the $1,000 commission fee, plus one year free rent in a live/work studio space at the Mag & May. In addition, she’ll have the opportunity to support a colleague with her lead role on the selection committee to commission an artist for a final Mag & May interior mural.
Anya Bosworth loves working with all mediums, but her predominant and most popular art form is her posable art dolls called room guardians. She started making them as a side project with a shop on Etsy, until they grew to be so popular that making them became her full-time job. Although most of her time is spent in sculpture, she also enjoys painting and 2-D art, as well as participating in community events and supporting local artists. Much of her work aims to take the foreign and mysterious subject of the spirit realm and tie it to familiar aspects of the visible realm.
All of the Mag & May murals, including Anya's, can be seen at the Mag & May, located at 315 Magnolia Avenue.
