Doug Renfro, President of Renfro Foods Inc., has a desk in nearly the same spot as the original office his grandparents shared when the company first took over the building on Stella nearly seventy years before. An exposed brick wall remains from the original structure; shelves take the place of the window through which they would have seen their corner of the Evans Rosedale Village. During college, Mr. Renfro worked as the spicer, precisely weighing ingredients like garlic and cumin for their sauces. On cold winter nights, his grandparents would open up their doors to offer warm refuge to police officers. Authentically local, Doug Renfro continues to imagine new flavors and the market continues to respond enthusiastically. Likewise, he points to the new Van Zandt Elementary on the other side of the property and he smiles when describing the bellwether of development surrounding the Ella Mae Shamblee Branch Library and Hazel Harvey Peace Center for Neighborhoods, where both act as cornerstones to a town village located conveniently to I35W. Local and federal funding have driven environmental cleanup, site prep as well as a low-interest loan program all of which have been supported by Near Southeast CDC, Southeast FW Inc. and Near Southside, Inc.
