In this case, the doctors say bigger is better.

Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth began a $23 million renovation and expansion of its emergency department Wednesday to keep pace with a growing and aging North Texas population.

Completion of the 36,300-square-foot facility, which will more than double the size of the existing emergency department, is planned for late spring of 2017.

The new facility will include two trauma treatment rooms, 32 treatment rooms and four triage rooms. A new imaging area will include a computerized tomography scanner, X-ray room and ultrasound exam room.

“Our current emergency department was designed to accommodate an average of 40,000 patients per year,” said Timothy Jones, emergency department medical director at the hospital. “This expansion allows us to grow with the thriving Fort Worth community and continue our mission of providing quality care for patients.”

The hospital, still commonly called All Saints, cared for 46,584 patients in its 25-bed emergency department last year.

The hospital is on Eighth Avenue at the west end of the Medical District.

“This advanced facility will help us meet and exceed the community’s emergency care needs now and in the future,” said Janice Whitmire, the hospital’s chief operating officer and interim president.
